Medicine in the 1930'S
By: Steve Purcell
William Osler, a Canadian physician once stated that “ The good physician treats the disease. The great physician treats the patient who has the disease.” This means if someone can’t afford to get treated, then they would have to find the best way to get treated. Health insurance was big because not everyone had money to afford to get taken care of for the diseases. Medicine was a major factor in the 1930’s because it helped others from dying from the diseases. In the 1930’s the illness for people have been really bad just because people couldn’t fight through it without the care and money. Therefore, the 1930’s had many issues that have caused it’s ups and downs.
First, during the 1930’s health insurance was a big topic because not everyone could pay their medical bill. In 1933 the average stay was two weeks and many patients could not afford to pay so beds remained empty. That is a huge problem because that causes deaths. There weren’t good jobs for people to get valuable money to get the help they needed. In 1933, America created the Blue Cross Plan to help pay hospital costs (The 1930s Medicine and Health Overview). That is a good thing for people with jobs because at least they get the help they deserve with their medical bills. However, those who were unemployed did not have the opportunity to have Blue Cross insurance and therefore, still had to stay home because they couldn’t get the proper medical help. Therefore, health insurance was of great concern during this time period.
In addition to insurance, medicine provided help to the people. There were many patients who needed the right medicine to help them. For example, sulfa drugs was a miracle cure for people with lots of diseases. During the bad times of the 1930’s many people were affected emotionally and would also seek medical help. In order for those people to be better mentally they would have to go into surgery. This type of surgery was called a lobotomy which is a violent process where it removed the nerves from the brain for the special needs people. That type of surgery helped many people in need of it. In addition to this procedure, another procedures called the chemical restraint helped people who suffered from anxiety and confusion (Benjamin B Mattingly 1). Therefore, medicine has helped the people because of the horrifying events in the 1930s.
Because of the causes that occurred in the 1930s there were a lot of illness. A lot of viruses have went by and many people have had different types of diseases. Measles is a disease that is caused by a virus and it is really bad to people. In the 1930s measles have killed thousands of people in Baltimore.”In the 1930s, measles infections in Baltimore sickened thousands and killed or permanently injured hundreds of children every year”(The Baltimore Statement on Childhood Vaccination 1). The meaning of this quote is measles have had made a major impact to people in Baltimore. Therefore, the illness of the 1930s caused a lot of problems.
In conclusion, during the 1930s there has been many issues that has caused its ups and downs. Health insurance was a big thing towards people needing help because everyone didn’t have money to pay for their medical bill. Medicine and illness were used together during the time period because with some illness the people would be able to use medicine to help themselves. What do you think life would be like now if medicine couldn’t help the people?
