Education In The 1930s:
By; DJ Rotz
“I think that when the education system started to be dismantled during the first Great Depression in the 1930s, we didn’t recover from that.” that quote was said by Wynton Marsalis who was a trumpeter and shows that although we’ve come a long way from the 1930s the education system still isn’t the same. Back then the way of teaching was way different than it is now. It was rough back then because there were racial barriers that separated each race and made them learn different things. The Dust Bowl also had a great effect on education because children couldn’t go to school due to all the dust that was around at the moment so for the safety of the children school closed. Lastly, The Great Depression had the most effect on education because there wasn’t enough money to fix rooms that were breaking. Due to the reasons above education was hit hard and may never be the same.
First off, racial barriers were a big thing back then and just because of your race, you were separated from others. Just because of one’s skin color, they were thought to be not as mentally capable as it mentions in the article The 1930s: Education: Overview that, the blacks were separated from the whites because the blacks weren’t thought to be as mentally capable as the whites and created the racial barriers so that the blacks would learn at a slower pace than the whites and the whites could learn at a faster pace than the blacks. This was bad because some of the black kids could have more potential to learn than the white kids but just because they were a different race they couldn’t learn what the white kids were being taught at a different school. Some blacks had to go to segregated schools because they were located in a very high poverty areas.(Rothstein, 1) Black kids also went to segregated schools because of the high poverty area they lived in and the other schools were to far away for the children to get to.(Rothstein, 2) They weren’t able to desegregate schools without desegregating the low incomes that the blacks got compared to the whites. The blacks were paid less than the whites and if they were to desegregate schools the pay of the blacks would be raised as well.
In addition, The Dust Bowl also had a big and bad effect on education. One reason that The Dust Bowl had an effect on education was because the schools were closed because of all the dust. The schools were closed for the health of the children due to the fact that the dust could harm a child's health and could cost their life. In the article Calling Off School for Dust it states that for the dust the schools were closed. Since the schools were closed the children couldn’t learn and in the article Out Of The Dust; Education in the 1930s it says that there was a decrease in school support due to the falling property taxes that were being caused because of the fall of value in farmland.
Another thing that had a great effect on education was The Great Depression. The Great Depression affected education in many ways and also had horrible effects on everyone around. One main thing that caused a problem with education was that the parents of the children couldn’t afford to buy the books that the children needed to learn. Without the books, children were not able to learn what the teacher would be teaching them. Another effect that The Great Depression had was that some people couldn't afford transportation due to the loss of jobs. Without transportation parents couldn’t take their children to school or couldn’t afford to get a transportation for the children to get to school. The other main effect The Great Depression had on education was that most schools were one big room and without money to fix them, the rooms started to fall apart. Without a classroom the children didn’t have anywhere to learn and didn’t have a school to go and learn at.
In conclusion, education was hit hard and will most likely never recover. Racial barriers were a bad thing and that’s gone now but they didn’t allow all races to learn at the same pace and the same things. The Dust Bowl caused schools to close down which didn’t allow them to go to school and learn. And The Great Depression put so many people into debt which led to them either not being able to get supplies for school or have money to fix the school rooms. In all, education was affected horribly and is still trying to improve.
